FBI Special Agent in Charge, Karen E. Spangenberg, announced the arrest today of Richard Weir. Weir, age 60, from Springfield, was arrested today without incident at his home, by the Central Illinois Health Care Fraud Task Force, made up of the FBI, HHS-OIG, Illinois State Police Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Illinois Attorney General’s Office, Illinois Department of Public Aid, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Richard Weir was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on 09/11/2007 for Health Care Fraud and Mail Fraud. The indictment alleges that Weir, as an agent of Cardinal Respiratory, devised a scheme to defraud Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance carriers of over $800,000.

Weir appeared in the United States District Court this afternoon in Springfield. A temporary order of detention was entered pending a formal detention hearing.

Members of the public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
