As the only non-investigative program in the Bureau, FBI Springfield's Community
Outreach Program (COP) has been involved in several activities. The mission
of the FBI's COP is to provide a comprehensive program that deals with multiple
interrelated societal problems, including crime, drugs, gangs, and violence
in support of the FBI's investigative mission. Linking community service, prevention,
and law enforcement is a major national trend as grass roots efforts have brought
about federal government support for public safety initiatives. FBI employees
have joined in this national movement, volunteering in a wide variety of community
related efforts. The Community Relations Unit in 2005 has realigned the COP's focus and changed its priority commitment to build and improve relations through outreach efforts. The new priorities are as follows: 1) Enhance the FBI Citizen's Academy Program, including providing resources, training, information and assistance. 2) Establish partnerships with national ethnic and minority groups and organizations. 3) Develop and support youth initiatives. 4) Support other community based terrorism and crime prevention initiatives. The Springfield COP is actively involved in these programs: School Mentoring Office Tours
